BHLive Peter Pan ticket email scam fools readers

As seasoned veterans in the email scam game we consider ourselves pretty hard to fool, but even we were left scratching our heads as a very realistic email purporting to come from BHLive tickets.

The email (below) asserted to confirm our recent purchase of 9 tickets for the Peter Pan show at Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre, totalling £145.00.

The email purporting to come from BHLive looked very convincing.

At first glance the email looked totally genuine, something that is thankfully quite rare when it comes to email scams.

Our first thoughts were that the confirmation email had been sent to us by mistake since our copy of the scam email didn’t have any included attachment (either purposely deleted en route or the scammer forgot to attach it) thus no apparent end-game for the scammer.

However an announcement from BHLive confirmed the scam.

At approximately 7.30 this morning BH Live started to receive a high-volume of calls from members of the public in connection with an email purporting to come from BH Live Tickets. The email contains attachment(s) and hyperlinks relating to a booking for Peter Pan.
BH Live’s Information Security teams together with information technology professionals and suppliers have investigated the matter and confirm that its internal systems have not been breached and that the emails were sent from known SPAM IP addresses. The emails are not genuine and do not originate from BH Live. A

It appears that some instances of this email did come included with a malicious email attachment containing malware.

It just goes to show that some email scams can look very realistic, so always be careful when opening email attachments or visiting links to external websites on unexpected or suspicious emails.
