Has Sally the robot housekeeper been freaking you out on E4?

UK social media users have this week been discussing Sally. The housekeeper. And here is why.

Social media sites have been ablaze over the last few days from very confused social media users from the UK, perplexed – and perhaps a little terrified – about a new advert promoting Sally, the latest robotic housekeeper that looks and sounds just like a human, the latest model from “Persona Synthetics”.

The advert, that has been showing on the UK’s 4 and E4 channels this week, features a fresh faced yet unemotional young woman named Sally, helping out around a family’s home. On the surface the advert appears clean and upbeat, describing Sally as a teacher, a helper, even a friend. She’s “part of the family”, the optimistic narrator exclaims.

But to those who can read between the lines, there is something more sinister afoot. For brief and fleeting moments, there is an intangible feeling of…… well…creepiness. Something that is more noticeable at the end of the advert where a seemingly concerned mom watches from the sofa as her child is being led up the stairs by Sally, before closing to the end credits featuring the “Persona Synthetics” splash screen.

Well, before you start panicking that you’re really living the first half of the I-Robot movie, not is all as it seems. In fact it’s a clever marketing ploy from Channel 4 promoting their latest drama, Humans, which is “set in a parallel present where the latest must-have gadget for a busy family is a synth — an advanced robotic servant.”

Given the ingenuous marketing campaign set forth by Channel 4 (even giving the made up “Persona Synthetics” their own website) it is clear the TV station has high hopes for this drama.

Of course the adverts airing on TV haven’t been giving the game away. For that you’d need to turn to the Internet for a little bit of sleuthing to get to the bottom of it all.

Don’t worry. Sally the demonic robot isn’t coming to destroy and everyone you know. It’s not real. But we’re sure Humans is going to be a very exciting watch indeed, when it airs soon(ish).
