Hitman advertises services on Facebook; Gets arrested.

Here’s a question. If you were a contract killer, what would you consider to be one of the most outright stupidest, most thoughtless things you could do?

If your answer is ‘create a Facebook Page to advertise your services’, then congratulations. You are already a better would-be assassin than Jonathan Giraldo, who did just that.

Going under the alias “Tony Garcia” – Giraldo, from Peru, may have won the award of stupidest criminal on the Internet, and believe us, we have a few contenders!

We’ve already covered criminals taking selfies of themselves committing crimes, or posting images on Facebook of the contraband they’ve managed to smuggle into jail.

But creating a Facebook Page advertising yourself as a hitman – complete with selfies and photos of your arsenal of weapons and bundles of money – really puts all other stories to shame.

On his Facebook Page (above) Giraldo posted a number of photos showing automatic weapons, a pistol with a silencer and photos of giant wads of cash. He also nicknamed himself “Anthrax”, presumably thinking he was covering his tracks. In his About section he writes “On the streets – you learn more than in school.”

After his Page was reported, police quickly managed to track him down to an apartment in Miraflores, a district in the capital of Lima, and arrested him as he was actually updating his Page with further incriminating details.

So if you think that the online equivalent of ambiguous “cleaning service” personal ads in telephone books is to branch out onto sites like Facebook, well… you’d be wrong.

It’s actually unclear if Giraldo is a contract killer, or just a rather silly little boy. Police spokesperson Leonidas Menendez says it best…

The truth of it is at the moment we do not know yet if he really is a contract killer or if he is an idiot making up a fantasy life from his bedroom, but we will find out the truth.

Investigations into his weapons including ballistics checks are to be carried out.

But seriously, in a world full of privacy stories about how authorities are increasingly using social media to track down criminals, how moronic must you actually be do advertise contract killing services on Facebook, even if you were joking?
