Win a Dodge Charger 1970 on Facebook? Not so fast…

Viral posts purporting to be giving away a Dodge Charger to those who like and share a Facebook post are spreading across Facebook.

If you’re looking to win a similar car to that driven by the famous Duke cousins Bo and Luke in the Dukes of Hazzard (okay that was a ’69 and the one on offer here is a ’70) then you may be disappointed to learn it’s all one run-of-the-mill Facebook competition scam.

Posts like the one below are spreading across Facebook urging readers to both like the page and share the post in order to stand a chance of winning a 1970 Dodge Charger.

However this is just a classic example of like-farming – the ability to accumulate likes for a Facebook page via deception – through a typical fake competition to bait victims.

Facebook users follow the instructions presented on the post and like the page that made that made the posted it. As a result the page – in this case named Dodge Charger 1970 – accumulates fans. At the time of writing this number is 278 thousand. This is a valuable online property, since many legitimate page admins will never accumulate this many fans and if they do it can take many years.

Thus the page becomes valuable and can be sold for profit or used to launch more sinister scams such as malware attacks or phishing scams, even identity theft or survey scams.

The important advice here is to always be extremely wary of pages that demand you both like, share and follow a page in order to enter some kind of competition. These are the typical hallmarks of a Facebook scam.
