Can I see who unfriended me on Facebook?

Along with ‘can I see who stalks me on Facebook‘ (no, you can’t) and ‘can I stop my friends tagging me on Facebook?‘ (still no) this is perhaps one of the most frequently asked questions concerning the Internet’s largest social networking website.

The answer. Yes. And no. Well, sort of. But you have to be careful.

Perhaps we should clarify that answer.

Facebook doesn’t provide an official tool for allowing you to see who unfriended you on their site. After all, they don’t want you to focus your precious attention on any of the negative aspects of social networking when instead you can be browsing your newsfeed for adorable photos of dogs or belly laughing at the latest viral prank video.

So if you are after a couple of clicks of the mouse and voila, a list of Facebook users who have unfriended you, then you’re out of luck.

But there are third party tools (i.e. Facebook apps or extensions) that can help you determine which of your Facebook friends decided to end their online friendship with you. The only catch is that these apps will only start working when you activate/install them. So if you’re looking for a list of friends that have already deleted you, then sorry, you can’t.

Basically, the moment you install a “see who unfriended you” app or browser extension, it takes a snapshot of your friends list. Then, a few weeks or months (or whatever) later, you can go back to the app which then takes another snapshot of your friends list, compares it to the first snapshot, and sees who is missing.

And there you have the identities of the friends who have unfriended you. Of course, these apps are also likely to list the accounts that you’ve unfriended too, or accounts that have been deleted from Facebook for whatever reason, since the app is unlikely to know the difference.

But be careful!

This is one of those niches that are plagued by fake, spammy Facebook apps, so if you are looking for an app that can do this, only install a trusted one with great reviews. The Huffington Post reviewed an app like this in the past known as the “Who Deleted Me” app.
