Drilling a hole into your iPhone 7 doesn’t give you a headphone jack

A video is going viral across the Internet that claims to provide a “secret hack” that will let iPhone 7 users create their own headphone jack, which was controversially missing in the latest model of iPhone.

The video (see it here on YouTube) actually claims the headphone jack is still present in the phone, and in order to access it, you just need to drill a 3.5mm hole into the bottom of the phone using a 3.5mm drill bit.

The 1.25min video, which was uploaded to YouTube by user TechRax, soon racked up well over 10 million views in only a few days.

Of course the video is just a joke, and not meant to be taken seriously. The iPhone 7 does not have the standard 3.5mm headphone jack, instead preferring Apple’s proprietary lightening port. And sadly, getting a 3.5mm jack installed is somewhat more complex than just getting out a 3.5mm drill bit and “going to work” on the iPhone chassis.

While it is unlikely that many of the millions of people who have already viewed the video actually took it seriously, it is certainly plausible that many may have. After all, iPhone users in the past have been tricked into putting their phones into the microwave to charge the battery, or even submerge it in water to test out the “new waterproof version of iOS”.

And many YouTube viewers have left comments on the video like the one below…

A friend of mine told me it worked for him, but my iPhone won’t turn on after I drilled the hole for the jack

And…

Ummm… My sound isn’t working! Is this a bad joke?

One user who apparently followed the steps in the video questioned why his phone no longer turned on, and asked if he had to “download the headphone jack app”. We’re suspecting (or hoping) that that may have actually been a joke.

Of course many comments have “confirmed” that the hack does indeed work, most likely trying to trick even more people into destroying their phones. This has no doubt helped the video go even more viral.

So, we’d just like to clarify for all you iPhone users out there – please don’t drill a hole in your iPhone. You’ll most likely destroy it. And people will laugh at you.
