Email Media Hoaxes

From sudden celebrity deaths to a wave of killer spiders on the loose, email media hoaxes refer to false rumours spreading like wildfire on the Internet, propogating from one email inbox to the next. The reasons these email rumours exists can vary, but is usually down to eith a practical joke or political motivation.

These emails often get out of hand. The Federal Bill 602P hoax for example, started off as a simple Internet rumour but grew so quickly it ended up in a televised debate for the New York Senate! These media hoaxes can get out of hand so easily because recipients don't take the time out to cross check claims made in emails with mainstream news outlets. Infuriating, since these news outlets nearly all have online services - so the answer can be only the click of a button away. Always check with news outlets when you receive an Internet rumour.
