Google Warn of Scareware Rise04/28/10Search engine Google have warned the public of the effects of a malware known as scareware after a study by them lasting 13 months and covering 240 million webpages revealed that an estimated 15% of all malicious software was scareware. Scareware is essentially a type of malware that tricks users into thinking that their computer is infected with other viruses. Scareware will typically inform its victims that their computer has been `scanned` and the scan has revealed multiple problems. It will then prompt users to download a full copy of its software which usually requires payment. However the fully copy is just malware, meaning the victim has just handed over money to scammers and now has a computer infected with serious malware. Users should be careful of what websites they visit, as visiting infected websites accounts for almost all of scareware installations. Users are also advised to only trust their own anti virus software program and be wary of popup windows reporting threats. |
