Facebook Users Subject to New Type of Spam

07/13/10

It seems that Facebook users are being subject to scam after scam and in this latest attack, users of the online social networking service are being diverted to external websites which attempt to bait them into doing various detrimental tasks with the promise of seeing some sort of intriguing video or image.

It is a spin-off from a certain type of Facebook group scam which claimed joining and sharing a group would let the visitor see or receive some sort of feature, bonus or prize. Victims joined and shared these groups, only to find that they have to complete surveys or expensive subscription plans as well, and still then whatever was on offer typically didn’t exist.

In plain terms, the new scam is exactly that but it removes the Facebook group aspect (because they were getting shut down by Facebook) and replaced it with external websites. Now victims are forwarded to external websites which request the victim both `Like` and `Share` the site which allows the SPAM to spread as joining and sharing the site posts it on the wall posts of your friends list as well. These sites also often request you post advertisements for the site elsewhere on Facebook. Upon completing these meaningless tasks, victims are finally baited into completing surveys, or worse, expensive subscription services, just like the original scam involving the Facebook groups. And just like the original Facebook group scams, whatever is on offer most likely does not exist anyway.

Facebook users are strongly urged to avoid external websites that insist upon sharing, liking, posting advertisements and completing surveys before they share with you whatever got you there in the first place. It is a new type of SPAM, and can potentially be very dangerous.
