Your Facebook Account Listed in All Connections Presents Security Threat?

IF YOU ARE LISTED AS YOUR OWN FRIEND

Notes:

HACKER DOOR INTO YOUR FB ACCT- I was just informed by a friend of mine- Hackers have a way into our accts - FB has a default where it lists ourselves in our friends list now - U need to remove yourself as a friend otherwise it is somehow an open door for hackers. Go to Account, go to edit friends, there search for your... name on the list and click the x to get your name removed.

IF YOU ARE LISTED AS YOUR OWN FRIEND THEN PEOPLE CAN USE THAT LINK TO HACK INTO YOUR ACCOUNT - SO REMOVE YOURSELF FROM BEING YOUR OWN FRIEND... EVERYONE. GO TO ACCOUNT - EDIT FRIENDS - ALL CONNECTIONS. IF YOU ARE LISTED AS YOUR OWN FRIEND REMOVE THE LINK. IT SHOULDNT BE THERE!

These messages that are floating around Facebook tell users to delete themselves from their list of users because of a security loophole. However the messages do not appear to be based on any reality or truth.

Whilst it is true that your own name appears on your `All Connections` list, deleting it seems to be futile since your name reappears the next time you load up the list. Whilst the act of deleting your name is harmless, there is no evidence to support the ambiguous claim that having your own name listed provides `an open door for hackers`.

Even if it were true, it would be a security loophole likely closed down by Facebook promptly after its discovery.

These messages appear to be hoaxes designed to waste the time of Facebook members, and can be safely ignored, if not just for the fact you cannot delete yourself anyway.

If you do notice any suspicious activity on your account, like unsolicited wall postings, these may be down to many genuine Koobface threats circulating through Facebook, like the Optical Illusion HQ threat and the Barack Obama Clinton Sex Scandal Koobface threat. Any suspicious activity should be reported to Facebook straight away, coupled with an antivirus scan. Read about Koobface here

Update - May4 2010 - In what is a likely attempt to slow down this viral rumour, Facebook have began fixing the bug that makes your own name appear in your list of friends. Facebook members should begin to see that they have been removed from this list.
