Fake Facebook Celebrity Pages
Scammers are continually trying to trick victims into giving away their personal information and the fake celebrity fan page is the latest in a long line of ploys to do just that.
How it works is scammers set up pages about a popular celebrity or group and creates an intriguing (yet fabricated) reason why members of that Facebook group or fan page should invite their friends and then click on an external link to another website.
For example Facebook members were told if they were to invite 25 of their friends to a Cheryl Cole fan page they could see compromising pictures of the Girls Aloud star. However after clicking on the external site, victims were then instructed that they first had to complete questionnaires and surveys that requested their personal information. This could potentially lead to many problems for the victim as they give away their personal information to strangers. They could end up on mailing lists which will increase both snail mail and email SPAM, and could even end up on expensive SMS subscriptions.
If victims manage to navigate their way through the bundles of offers asking for their personal information, they will usually find that the initial reason they were doing it in the first place never existed. That’s right, the compromising pictures of Cheryl Cole never existed, and now several companies have your personal information.
Facebook members are advised to never join, nor invite your friends, to Facebook groups that request you go to external websites and complete surveys.
