Is Apple giving away iPhone 6’s in memory of Steve Jobs?

Links that claim tech giant Apple are giving away free iPhone 6’s in memory of Steve Jobs are spreading across Facebook.

And upon clicking the links, the user is forwarded to a type of page we’ve become all too familiar with here – a page that requests a user both likes and shares a webpage before being able to continue. And upon doing that the user is then forwarded to a website called FunkyClock.com which we discussed recently.

FunkyClock.com is a competition rewards website, where users pay a monthly fee of around £74 to be able to enter competitions and play games where they may win prizes. It isn’t affiliated with Apple and it isn’t giving away Apple iPhone’s to those who sign up.

These links are spreading across Facebook.

The problem is that a lot of shady spammers have become affiliated with FunkyClock.com and get paid when they refer customers to them. These spammers exploit lots of unethical traffic-gathered techniques to fool users into visiting and registering for FunkyClock, including the assertion that Apple are “giving away free iPhone’s” when that is not the case.

Another popular method is to claim that Apple are giving away the iPhone 6 for a mere £1/$1. And this is also the case for a range of other “must-have” gadgets as well. In fact if you see any link or advert claiming to offer tech gadgets at ludicrously low prices, there is a good chance that this is the type of con you’re seeing. It is essentially a bait-and-switch type scam where a too-good-to-miss deal is offered and upon clicking through, the deal changes to something much less appealing.

These types of scams are commonplace on Facebook. Click here for more information on how spammy Facebook competitions and giveaways work.
