No, you won’t win a 2016 VW Camper for sharing a Facebook post

Despite what a Facebook post may claim, you won’t win a free 2016 VW Camper just for sharing a post across Facebook. This is a fake giveaway like-farming scam.

The Facebook post implores readers to share it onto their timeline, comment “VWGiveaway” to the post and like the page in order to stand a chance of winning.

This is, of course, a rather standard like-farming Facebook scam, which means it is designed to bait users into liking a Facebook page by deception. In this case that deception is in the form of a fake Facebook giveaway. No free prizes are really on offer here, it is just a tactic to lure users into liking the Facebook page, thus the name like-farming. Fake giveaways is just one method like-farming scammers employ and you can learn more about like-farming scams here.

Fake giveaways like this are famous for trying to directing Facebook users to spammy marketing webpages. It is likely that the post will be later edited to include a link to a spammy marketing webpage, or future posts made by the page (which the user is instructed to follow) will include links to such marketing webpages. The spammers behind these like-farming scams will receive a commission every time they lure people to such websites.

And of course, the 2016 VW Camper prize does not exist. It’s just a fake offer used as bait.

In this case the page that made the post is clearly a typical like-farming Facebook page. It lacks the blue verification tick that Facebook gives to pages that are officially linked to a brand, and thus the offer has nothing to do with the official Volkswagen. The page – called VW Camper 2016 – at the time of writing has made only a handful of posts and it has only recently been created – these are popular hallmarks of fake giveaway scams.

Let your friends know to stop falling for these posts. The only people who will likely lose out are the people who like and share these posts, and it’s all so spammers can make money by luring Facebook users like YOU to following spammy like-farming Facebook pages and directing you to spammy marketing websites.
