Scam – £75 Morrisons coupon for anniversary Facebook post

A Facebook post claiming to be offering free £75 or £50 Morrisons coupon for their 80th anniversary for those that share the post onto their timeline is spreading across the social networking website. However it is a fake giveaway scam.

Upon clicking the link, users are taken to a website that implores readers to share the link onto their timelines to stand a chance of winning. It also claims that you need to complete a survey to obtain the coupon.

Various incarnations of the scam exist, one claiming the coupon is celebrating the 80th anniversary and another claiming it is the 117th anniversary of the UK supermarket. Another claims it is the 127th anniversary.

This is, of course, a rather standard fake giveaway scam, which means it is designed to bait users into spreading a link via their Facebook timelines using a fake competition or giveaway as bait. No free prizes are really on offer here, it is just a tactic to lure users into spreading spammy links via their timelines. Fake giveaways is just one method scammers employ to lure Facebook users into spreading content like this.

In the case of this scam, users are directed to an external link to obtain their prize. However these links direct to spammy marketing webpages that are designed to harvest the personal information of its visitors so they can be targeted with further spam. These websites are also related to serious scams like identity fraud, and it is how the spammers make their money since they earn a commission every time they trick people into interacting with these marketing websites.

And of course, the free £75 coupon for Morrisons does not exist. It’s just a fake offer used as bait.

These links have nothing to do with the official Morrisons brand. Many of the links misspell the name “Morrisons” (referring to it as “Morissons”) and the website users are forwarded to is not the official Morrisons website.

Don’t fall for these scams. You’re not going to win a free coupon just for sharing a post on your timeline. We recommend avoiding spreading these types of posts. You are exposing both yourself and your friends to spam and potentially much more serious scams.
