How to set up the Facebook “Trusted Contacts”

Most of us don’t like the idea of losing our Facebook accounts. They hold plenty of personal information and special memories – data we’d rather not lose.

So if we ever do lose access to our Facebook account – for example the account gets compromised, or we forget our password and cannot access our email – then we will want to ensure we can regain access to it as fast as possible.

One way of doing this is through Facebook’s “Trusted Contacts” feature, which previously was known as “Trusted Friends”.

This feature allows Facebook users to pick between three to five Facebook contacts that will be able to help if they ever lose access to their account.

Of course, we need to be careful about what contacts we choose, since they are given a special code that can regain access to our accounts. Facebook says that when choosing these friends, pick friends that you would trust with a spare key to your house.

So, obviously friends that you know in person that you would be able to contact easily enough outside of Facebook.

How it works

If for whatever reason you cannot access your Facebook account or emails, simply select the “Forgotten my Password” link from the login page, locate your account and tell Facebook that you no longer have access to any of the emails associated with your account. You will then be asked to type a new email or phone number to which you can access.

Click the Reveal My Trusted Contacts option and type the full name of one of your trusted contacts you chose. You’ll then be given a URL web address that you need to give to that trusted contact. Once that contact visits the URL on a device were they are logged in, they will be given a security code for you. Simply get the security code from them and login to Facebook with it.

Simple!

But first, of course you need to enable “Trusted Contacts” and choose them. You can do that in your main account settings under the Security tab, then pick the “Your Trusted Contacts” option and go from there.
