Preventing SPAM/Verify Account Facebook Message - Facebook Scam
The latest mass viral SPAM campaign against users of popular social networking site giant Facebook sees messages circulating that claim to help (ironically) prevent SPAM by urging the Facebook user to verify their account by clicking a link on a wall post.
In reality, this is a recently discovered expolit that allows a scammer to append an additional option at the end of a post, in this case the extra option is ==VERIFY MY ACCOUNT==, where upon being clicked, actually shares the wall post to the Facebook users friend list. Facebook users should be aware that they are NOT "verifying their account" to prevent SPAM at all, rather they are actually SPAMMING their friends!
The actual message itself reads -
Please do your part in PREVENTING SPAM by VERIFYING YOUR ACCOUNT. Click VERIFY MY ACCOUNT right next to the comment below to begin the verification process....
Also see the image below for a screen capture of a message -
As you can see, an extra option appears under the message that suggests clicking on it will somehow verify your account. Wrong. Clicking on it will share the post and help it circulate across Facebook.
At present, this particular SPAM message is enjoying great success, most likely because of the brand new exploit it seems to be taking advantage of. If you see the message appear on your wall or newsfeed, simply delete it by clicking the X in the top right hand corner of the post and click "Hide this Post".
HACKERS ARE AT IT AGAIN. IF YOU GET A REQUEST FROM A FRIEND ASKING YOU TO DO YOUR PART IN PREVENTING SPAM BY VERIFYING YOUR ACCOUNT. DO NOT CLICK IT, IT IS SPAM. I just got one and have been informed that the person did not send it. It was sent automatically. Please feel free to copy and repost to warn your friends IT IS A NEW VIRUS GOING AROUND ON FB PASS THIS ON PLEASE! ;0)
!!!!!Virus/Spam Alert!!!!! IF YOU GET THIS ON YOUR WALL DO NOT CLICK ON IT!!! IT IS EITHER A HACKER OR A VIRUS....AS FOLLOWS : "Please do your part in PREVENTING SPAM by VERIFYING YOUR ACCOUNT. Click VERIFY MY ACCOUNT right next to comment below to begin the verification process..." ..... AGAIN DO NOT CLICK ON IT CLICK DELETE / MARK AS SPAM
The warnings are mostly correct (except the typical assertion this is a virus - it is not) but Facebook users should exercise caution when circulating these types of warnings. This exploit should not be around for long (Facebook will most likely be working on the problem), and warnings like the examples above have a tendency to far outlive the threat they are describing.
