Hurricane Sandy Fake Photos - Internet/Facebook Rumour
Other Keywords: Hurricane Sandy Shark Photos
Social network users are advised to be on the watch out for any of several photos claiming to depict Hurricane Sandy or the consequences of Hurricane Sandy.
The real threat of Hurricane Sandy seems to have the hoaxers and pranksters out in force, with many photos circulating the Internet.
The following are photos circulating Facebook, Twitter and Internet forums regarding hurricane Sandy. We take a look at each one and state their legitimacy. If you have seen any other photos and want us to take a look at them email us as firstname.lastname@example.org
Statue of Liberty and the SuperCell
This photo of the Statue of Liberty with a daunting looking cloud formation in the background is actually a work of fiction. The cloud formation has actually been photoshopped and been placed in the background of this image of the Statue of Liberty.
The original photo of the cloud formation can be seen here, a few photos down.
Soldiers Guard the Tomb of the Unknowns
As Hurricane Sandy approaches, soldiers continue to guard the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington, VA. "LIKE" and "SHARE" this post if you appreciate their service. And be sure to click on the link below for the latest Sandy coverage on wave3.com.
This photo of three soldiers guarding the Arlington National Cemetery Monument during pouring rain was actually taken in September, as the Old Guard Twitter feed have confirmed.
With that said they have also stated via their Facebook page that they will indeed keep guard of the “tomb of the unknown soldier” during the storm. This is what they have posted on Facebook –
The Sentinels at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier maintain their vigil even as Hurricane Sandy bears down on the Eastern Seaboard. The Old Guard has guarded the tomb every minute of every day since April 6, 1948. Today will be no exception.
It would be better to post the real photos from their Facebook page instead of posting photos taken in September.
Statue of Liberty, Tidal Wave and LIVE CAM
A little incredulous, really. This photo is actually a promo shot from the Hollywood Blockbuster movie “The Day After Tomorrow” and of course does not depict Hurricane Sandy. The LIVE CAM banner has just been "photoshopped" in.
Sharks in the Water!
No, do not worry, shark photos seem to appear during every natural disaster that involves flooding. The photo above has been photoshopped and is not the first time we have seen this particular shark. Check out this article we posted earlier in the year that is another work of fiction featuring the same photo of this shark! In fact this same fake photo has circulated in response to several disaters, including Hurricane Irene.
These two photos were originally posted by a Facebook user called Kevin McCarty from Brigantine Beach in New Jersey, and have both been circulated prolifically. However after hours of tracking the original shark photos we can safely say these two photos are photoshopped. The original sharks are both below.
Hurricane Sandy Floods McDonalds
Whilst flooding has and will occur, this photo was take from a film taken in 2009 and has nothing to do with the Hurricane.
Always verify the legitimacy of a photo before passing it on to your friends. There are plenty of real photos of Hurricane Sandy being shared by Weather and News channels, so there is really no need to share fake ones.
