Messages are circulating the Internet that claim Muslims do not need pay the so called "Bedroom Tax" introduced into the UK as they can designate would-be bedrooms as Prayer Rooms.

However the rumours are false. The Welfare Reform Act 2012 is an Act of Parliament that came into effect at the start of April 2013 and its main provision is to reduce the amount of benefits that claimants receive if they are deemed to have too many unused bedrooms. Whilst this is strictly not a taxation of any kind, the media have popularly dubbed the Act the "Bedroom Tax".

There are exemptions to the Act, for example those not of the working age are exempt, or parents of teenage military personnel are exempt. However there are no exemptions for Muslims who face the same criteria as everyone else.

The number of bedrooms in a property is designated by the Tenancy Agreement signed by both the landlord and tenant, and it is this document that the Government will work from when applying the Bedroom Tax. Such documents will almost certainly never designate any room as a Prayer Room when it could be a bedroom.

The rumour has been debunked by several local councils already.

This is yet another classic example of racist propaganda and completely untrue, and we strongly recommend not spreading any of these rumours which aim to isolate and cause hatred and tension towards ethnic minorities.
