Controversial news can often spark a flurry of false rumours and the recent acquittal of George Zimmerman over the shooting of black teenager Trayvon Martin has sparked plenty of public outcry, both online and offline, and this outcry has helped false information circulate virally.

And perhaps the most popular rumour currently circulating – primarily across Twitter and Instagram - comes in the form of an image with a caption asserting to show the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco bustling with thousands of people protesting the decision to acquit Zimmerman.

However, whilst the image does indeed show the bridge, the event is far from anything to do with the Zimmerman case. In fact the image was taken before Trayvon Martin was even born, in 1987 during the 50th anniversary of the bridge where 300,000 people crowded the bridge in a celebration known as Bridgewalk ’87.

As always it’s best to check and verify information before passing it on to your friends. False information often circulates with more success than genuine information, especially across social media.
