A photo depicting a phone bill from AT&T is circulating the Internet that apparently show a surcharge labelled “lawful interception recovery fee” that, according to the attached message, is the charge given to the customer so AT&T can wiretap the phone.

The letter is certainly false. Firstly the listed items on the left and the corresponding prices do not match, as there is one extra price listed suggesting that the bill has been digitally altered. The total price at the bottom - $3.99 - also does not match the sum of the prices listed.

Secondly and also worth noting is that despite the viral success of the above image not one single phone bill quoting the same charge – or indeed any complaints appearing elsewhere on the Internet – have surfaced on the Internet, which would be inevitable if AT&T started charging this to a selection of their customers.

And finally AT&T customer services confirmed to us that they were not aware of a charge that went by this name, essentially putting this rumour to bed.
