ATTENTION FRIENDS IN THE GILBERT AREA (especially with kids): Last week two young slavic girls came to our house selling Children`s books. They asked to come in and were very pushy. They interacted with Maximus for awhile and asked us a ton of questions. They had a binder full of names of families in the area and kept asking over and over for us to give them more names of kids in our neighborhood and surrounding area. They came back two days later again.

Today I found out there is a scam of two women "with heavy accents" going door to door pretending to sell children`s books but who are targeting young girls for sex trafficking. There have been abductions from this scam in other states. I spoke with Gilbert PD and they are already investigating. PLEASE CALL THE POLICE if these girls come to your door.

Messages are circulating the Internet at breakneck speed warning people across the USA about Russian booksellers who are going door to door pretending to sell books but are really looking for children to kidnap for the sex trafficking trade. Versions of the rumours also claim the booksellers are Russian spies.

The rumours are totally baseless and there are no valid police warnings issued that match any of the descriptions in the message. Variants of these rumours have mentioned several areas, including Gilbert (AZ), Winona County (MN), Berkeley Country (SC) and Broken Arrow (OK) amongst several others.

It is likely that the messages originated either mistakenly or maliciously from genuine booksellers operating in those states who work for Southwestern Co., an American conglomerate that hires students to sell educational books and materials. Often these students will be from Eastern countries such as Russia and Estonia. Despite the nefarious claims made in the warning messages above, these booksellers do just that sell books.

In fact various police forces across the US have specifically disputed the claims made in the messages, such as the Winona Police Dept. who investigated several complaints and found no suspicious activity.

Local media in Oklahoma also claim the rumours are false after speaking to the local police there.

Rebuttals can be found elsewhere on the Internet from local media and local police forces where the rumours have spread.

Spreading this sort of panic inducing nonsense without verification of the facts is irresponsible. Remember, whilst social media can be used as an effective medium against criminals, you still need to make sure what you pass on is in fact correct!
