This message is circulating Facebook warning of a “new known” spider spreading in Australia, accompanied by graphic pictures of what appears to be a wound on a person’s hand, apparently caused by the bite.

However the message is false. In fact the photos above have been circulating the Internet for a number of years, albeit with a more accurate description than the example above.

Previous examples accurately identified the spider as the Brown Recluse spider. However the example above omits the identity of the spider and refers to it as a recently discovered spider, which is false.

The example above also claims the spider is spreading in Australia, which is also false. The Brown Recluse is found in the USA, and there is no indication that it is spreading in Australia, who have very strict rules when it comes to introducing new species of animals into their delicate eco-system.

The only accurate information is the possibility that the injuries in the pictures were caused by a spider bite. The Brown Recluse bite, in extreme and exceptional circumstances can cause tissue necrosis, (tissue death) in the unfortunate recipient. However again this is uncommon. Typical symptoms will involve throbbing and a red mark at the area of the bite.

Whilst fatalities have been recorded from such bites, again this is extremely uncommon.

The previous text attributed to the images is far more accurate and can be seen below.

The following illustrates the progression of a brown recluse spider bite. The affected skin actually dies on his body. Some of the pictures towards the end are pretty nasty, but take a look at the last one -- it is a picture of the spider itself.

The Brown Recluse Spider is the most dangerous spider that we have here in the USA.

A person can die from it`s bite. We all should know what the spider looks like. Send this around to people you love, because it is almost summertime. People will be digging around, doing yard work, spring cleaning, and sometimes in their attics. Please be careful.

Spider bites are dangerous and can have permanent and highly negative consequences. They like the darkness and tend to live in storage sheds or attics or other areas that might not be frequented by people or light. If you have a need to be in your attic, go up there and turn on a light and leave it on for about 30 minutes before you go in to do your work.
