Rumours and links are circulating social media that claim a Japanese whaling crew were “eaten alive” by killer whales resulting in 16 deaths and 12 injuries.
If the news were true it would certainly show what many would claim to be a somewhat ironic justice, but alas the news is completely untrue and just another example of yet another fake news article that presents itself as true but is actually, at least according to the website that published it, a satirical piece.
There is no truth whatsoever to the news. The photo used in the article actually shows an Australian customs boat beside a Japanese whaling ship named Nisshin Maru way back in 2008.

The story was published by a site called WorldNewsDailyReport.com, which is just another website that publishes fake news articles with curious titles designed to lure clicks and traffic to their website. Such sites claim the articles are actually satirical in nature but often this is not apparent and the articles are dressed up like genuine news articles.
These sites exploit a business model that involves duping users into clicking headlines on social media websites and thus generating traffic to a website that makes money via its sponsored advertisements. We generally recommend avoiding these sites. For more information on how these hoaxes work, read our article here.
