NYPD officer kills baby following breastfeeding argument - Internet/Facebook Rumour

10 Aug 2014 - Article No: 1869. Filed under: General | Internet/Facebook Rumour

Rumours are circulating the Internet that tell the story of a baby killed by a police officer following a breast feeding argument.

The rumours, often circulated via links to NationalReport.net, claim the officer tried to arrest a breast feeding woman that resulted in the accidental death of her infant that fell to the ground during the arrest.

The outrageous story, which is clearly aimed at causing anger towards law enforcement, is completely fictitious and is not based on any real event.

The officer in the story Michael Fitzsimmons, the baby Layla and the woman Suzanne Smith do not exist.

The story was published by a site called NationalReport.net, which is just another website that publishes fake news articles with curious titles designed to lure clicks and traffic to its website. Sites like these claim the articles are actually satirical in nature but often this is not apparent and the articles are dressed up like genuine news articles.

NationalReport.net previously had a disclaimer claiming the stories were “political satire” though many of its stores bear no resemblance whatsoever to satire and are simply fake news stories with no obvious attempt to convey humour.

These sites exploit a business model that involves duping users into clicking headlines on social media websites and thus generating traffic to a website that makes money via its sponsored advertisements. We generally recommend avoiding these sites. For more information on how these hoaxes work, read our article here.
