Removing Unwanted Facebook Applications

An article describing the current method of removing unwanted Facebook applications and any automated posts they may have made from your accout.

You may want to remove an application for a number of reasons. It may be that you do not use the application any more, or most likely it is because you were tricked into installing it and now it is SPAMing your friends list and creating its own status updates.

If you want to remove an application from Facebook, which means it will no longer have access to your status or your wall, or any of your private personal information, then do the following –

1. Click on the down arrow next to the Home icon on the top right hand corner of the Facebook screen.
2. Select “Privacy Settings” from the drop down menu. (see image below)

3. Click "Edit Settings" next to “Apps and Websites” (see image below)

4. Next to “Apps you use” select the Edit Settings box (see image below)

5. You should see a list of applications. Click the X icon on the right of each name to remove the respective application, or you can click “Edit settings” to change that applications abilities. (see image below)

Once removed, that application no longer has access to your account, including your personal information and contact information. It will also no longer be able to post messages from your account or contact your friends.

If it has already posted messages from your account, first go to your Facebook profile by clicking Profile on the top right hand corner of your Facebook page. On your profile you should see the automated post on your newsfeed. Hover over it and you will see an X appear on the top right hand corner of your post. Click it and then click Remove Post. This will clear the post.

If you are the person sending the Chat message, then this is likely a rogue Facebook application, in which case follow the instructions on this page.

If the message is being sent to you from someone else, then inform them that they have to remove the application.

Some Facebook applications do have access to the Chat facility, at the time of writing.

So if they send us a message, do we just not click on the link?

@MA - if an application sends a link through Chat, a tagged photo or through a wall post or comment, you should not click the link.
