Woman who said “Australia is a hoax” fooled A LOT of people

A woman from Sweden seems to have been having a great time this week on social media, at the expense of Australia.

Shelley Floryd, who according to her Facebook profile hails from Stockholm in Sweden, announced to her social media followers this week that Australia – the country “down under” – was in fact… a hoax.

Yes. A hoax. As in… it doesn’t exist. According to her post, all that so-called proof that Australia exists is just fabricated lies. And your Australian friends? Either actors or “computer generated personas”.

The post, in all its glory, can be seen below.

Australia is not real. It’s a hoax, made for us to believe that Britain moved over their criminals to someplace. In reality, all these criminals were loaded off the ships into the waters, drowning before they could see land ever again. It’s a coverup for one of the greatest mass murders in history, made by one of the most prominent empires.
Australia does not exist. All things you call “proof” are actually well fabricated lies and documents made by the leading governments of the world. Your Australian friends? They’re all actors and computer generated personas, part of the plot to trick the world.
If you think you’ve ever been to Australia, you’re terribly wrong. The plane pilots are all in on this, and have in all actuality only flown you to islands close nearby – or in some cases, parts of South America, where they have cleared space and hired actors to act out as real Australians.
Australia is one of the biggest hoaxes ever created, and you have all been tricked. Join the movement today, and make it known that they have been deceived. Make it known, that this has all just been a cover-up. The things these “Australian” says to be doing, all these swear words and actions based on alcoholism, MDMA and bad decisions, are all ways to distract you from the ugly truth that is one of the greatest genocides in history. 162,000 people was said to have been transported to this imaginary land during a mere 80 years, and they are all long dead by now. They never reached that promised land.
Tell the truth. Stand up for what is right. Make sure to spread the world – Australia is not real. It’s a codeword for the cold blooded murder of more than a hundred thousand people, and it is not okay. We will not, accept this.
Stand up for the ones who died. Let it be known, that Australia does not exist.

The post was widely shared over Facebook, over 19,000 times as we write this. And it inevitably attracted plenty of criticism, especially from some angry Australians. After all, they were essentially being told they didn’t exist. That’s not cool.

Well, before your palm reaches your forehead, we can confirm that Shelley wasn’t serious. A scroll down her largely public Facebook profile reveals that she was perhaps having a little too much fun with the media attention and angry comments directed towards her, proudly posting links of various blogs that had written articles about her “conspiracy post”. That includes links from KIISFM, The Vine and Buzzfeed, blogs that had apparently taken Shelley’s post at face value.

Eventually we got to the post that we were long expecting – nay, hoping for – it was all a joke, and in fact Shelley was planning to visit her Australian friends – in Australia – in the next few months.

It’s time to end this now, aye.
Yes, I’m fully aware of the fact that Australia exists. Everything I’ve said has been complete jokes, which you all kept adding fuel to and made it blow up. The long post, that now have more than 60,000 comments, was made up on the spot as I was laying in bed the other day. The entire joke is based on the fact that my Australian best friend (I have two best friends in NSW, and another 30-40 friends spread across the country) said he hated the Smiths. No one hates the Smiths, so I simply came to the conclusion that Australia doesn’t exist.
I am, in fact, going to Australia in July-August, staying for three weeks. It would be kinda stupid for me to go to an imaginary country, wouldn’t it?
I’m also, to everyone telling me to read up and get my facts straight, currently in the progress of writing an essay on Australia, it’s history, culture, geography, politics, climate, and so on. I’ve been reading up and taking notes on the country for nearly three weeks now, watching documentaries and reading online. I’m adding in some photos of my current studies so that you might realise that no, I’m not just saying this to be left alone.
So yeah, the bogans who actually believed that post (and following) – learn to take a joke (and please learn the difference between you’re and your).
xx much love xx

So it turns out that you can’t believe everything you see on the Internet after all. Who knew?

To be fair to the many people who took Shelley’s post seriously, anyone who has ever typed “false flag” into YouTube recently will soon discover that some people do really believe in a whole lot of crazy things (we type this as the usual plethora of conspiracy-themed videos spread about the recent Westminster attack in London.)

In comparison to some of those videos, Shelley’s post may have actually seemed rather tame.

Either way, relax. Australia is real.
