Was Ilhan Omar caught on video “partying” on 9/11 anniversary? Fact Check

Rumours online claim that congresswomen Ilhan Omar “partied” on the anniversary of 9/11. Such rumours are typically attached to what appears to be smartphone video of the congresswoman dancing alongside a number of other partygoers.

FALSE

Despite the claims, this video does not show Omar dancing on the anniversary of the September 11th attacks, nor does the video show an event associated with the 9/11 attacks.

While the video does indeed show Ilhan Omar dancing, a quick online search reveals that the video was first published by Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC) on September 13th along with the hashtag #CBC2019.

Can someone name something better than @IlhanMN dancing to @lizzo? Because I can’t think of anything. #CBC2019 #CBCWeek #cbcweekend

That hashtag is a reference to the Congressional Black Caucus weekend, which was celebrated with a series of events including the 6th annual reception held on September 12th and a gathering the day after (Sept 13th) at the Culture House in Washington DC, where the video was filmed.

Since the event was not connected to the September 11th attacks and did not occur on September 11th, it would be inaccurate to claim that Ilhan Omar was partying on the anniversary of September 11th.

EDIT: A previous version of this article misstated that the video was taken at the CBC annual reception on September 12th.
