Did CNN banner claim Colorado shooter was “morally white”? Fact Check

A screenshot showing an apparent CNN broadcast had a banner reading “Investigation: Shooter was factually Arabic, but morally white“.

FALSE

The image is below.

The image is spreading in the aftermath of the Boulder, Colorado shooting where ten people were gunned down in the latest mass shooting within the United States. It is also spreading amid controversy of the suspect’s ethnicity and how many believe shooters of differing ethnicities are treated differently by both the mainstream media and law enforcement.

However the image is false, and it comes from a Babylon Bee publication, which is a popular satirical publication in the US that operates under the banner “fake news you can trust“. On March 23th they published an article under the headline “media now claims shooter was factually arab, but morally white” which contained the fake screenshot from CNN.

At some point the fake screenshot was altered again, replacing the word “Arab” with “Arabic”.

But as we pointed out, the screenshot is a fabrication. Going back to the timestamp in the image, CNN were actually running a banner (or chyron) reading “Colorado shooting suspect booked into jail today“, as per below.

According to the most recent reports, the Colorado shooting suspect, Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa was born in Syria in 1999 and emigrated to the United States in 2002.
