Did Kanye West lose 9 million followers after pro-Trump tweets? Fact Check

Rumours claim singer and reality TV star Kanye West lost 9 million Twitter followers after posting “pro-Trump” tweets this week.

During April 25th 2018, among many dozens of tweets, Kanye posted a number of tweets about President Donald Trump, claiming the pair shared “dragon energy” as well as a picture of a signed Make America Great Again baseball cap.

However, soon after the tweets were made, many Twitter users reported seeing a sudden drop in Kanye’s followers, claiming his follow count dropped from 27 million down to 18 million. Independent screenshots and third party counters seemed to confirm the sudden drop.

Given the timing, many spectators and media outlets attributed the drop to Kanye’s tweets about President Trump.

Despite many Twitter followers seeing the drop in Kanye’s followers, others asserted that according to what they were seeing, Kanye’s follow count was holding steady at around 27 million, suggesting a technical glitch.

This was later confirmed in a message from Twitter that reads –

We can confirm that Kanye’s follower count is currently at approximately 27M followers and any fluctuation that people might be seeing is an inconsistency and should be resolved soon.

Heading to Twitter and looking at Kanye’s account, we can see that his follow count is indeed at 27 million. As such, the singer did not lose 9 million followers overnight.

It is unlikely that Kanye West posting pro-Trump content would have any significant effect on his social media following. He has made no secret of his fondness for the President; the pair even met shortly after Trump won the 2016 presidential election when they said they were “friends”.
