Did Minnesota receive more votes than registered voters? Fact Check

Rumours online claim that the state of Minnesota had far more votes than voters registered in the state during the 20202 US presidential election.

Such rumours claim that the state received 5,149,039 votes despite the state having only 3,588,563 registered voters.

FALSE

Claims that a particular area, region, county or state has had more votes than registered voters is a common theme among those who promote the narrative of election fraud. Often these claims are based on poor maths or poorly sourced information.

In this case it’s certainly poorly soured information. While it is true that (at the time of writing) Minnesota has 3,588,563 registered voters, the claim that it has received over 5 million votes is simply incorrect, and we don’t know where that number has come from.

In reality, Minnesota has received just over 3.2 million votes during the 2020 election (again this is at the time of writing since it is 99% reported as we author this article.) That’s about a 90% rate between the votes cast versus the number of registered voters in Minnesota, which is about what would be expected during an election that has seen exceptionally high turnout.
