Did student prank school by putting laxatives in lemonade? Fact Check

Videos are spreading online that claim to show the consequence of a school prank where a student spiked the school lemonade with laxatives. The video shows students suffering from diarrhea in the hallways, in the toilets as well as many apparently suffering from stomach cramps.

In certain parts of the video, other students can be seen vomiting and falling over. Some examples of captions can be seen below –

Later rumours claim the student spiked the lemonade with “horse laxatives”.

However, the video is not real, and has been staged.

In reality, it is from a Netflix “mockumentary” called American Vandal, which has recently released its second season. American Vandal is a satirical “documentary” series that pokes fun at real life murder mystery shows such as Making a Murderer.

As such, the show is entirely staged and only takes the guise of a documentary. In its first season, the storyline showed a student’s attempts to prove a fellow student innocent of graffiti-ing a school carpark with phallic symbols. In the second season, aptly dubbed “The Turd Burgular“, a mystery student spikes the school’s lemonade supply with laxatives. The trailer can be seen below –

The scenes in the videos circulating online simply show footage from scenes of the second season of this Netflix show, which was released in September 2018. The scenes have been made grainy and “home-made” to add authenticity to the mockumentary series. But they are, of course, entirely staged.

So rest assured, those scenes needn’t keep you up all night. It was all special effects. Thankfully.
