Did The Simpsons predict Twitter rebrand? Fact Check

Online rumours claim that TV cartoon series The Simpsons predicted the Twitter rebrand to X in an episode that featured Homer using a smartphone that featured the new Twitter X logo.

FALSE

One of the most persistent niches of online tomfoolery is that the TV show The Simpsons is able to predict future events. Such hoaxes have become so familiar that some in the online conspiracy underworld even believe its creators furtively control or influence global events.

And while there has been some [mild at best] “predictions” [nay, coincidences] such as The Simpsons mentioning a “President Trump” long before Donald Trump really did ascend to the White House, most of the alleged predictions are purely fictional, such as the claim the TV series predicted the Notre Dame fire, or the death of George Floyd, or the Superbowl results, or Lady Gaga’s Superbowl halftime show, or the COVID-19 outbreak.

The latest incarnation of The Simpsons predicted string of nonsense is that the show predicted Twitter’s rebrand to X. The claims are in the form of a screenshot of an episode purporting to show Homer Simpson creating a social media post with the new X logo clearly visible on the bottom of the smartphone screen – as seen below –

However the image is fake. The screenshot was taken from an episode from the 23rd Season of The Simpsons called “Ned ‘n Edna’s Blend Agenda”, and the original screenshot shows the real image which was covered up. The image – while still X-shaped – actually shows something more resembling a compass – possibly a quick replicate of the Safari browser logo. See below.

To claim that this is some kind of prediction of Twitter’s rebrand would be a bit of a stretch to say the least, given there is no strong resemblance between the image and the actual new Twitter logo.

Alas, this is another Simpsons-themed prediction that we rate false.
