Fake viral photo shows 30 feet waves crashing over Jennette Pier in North Carolina

An image from a photography page is going viral that apparently shows extremely large waves caused by Hurricane Jose crashing over the Jennette Pier at Nags Head in North Carolina.

The below image – that according to the caption was taken on 18th September 2017 – claims the waves were over 30 feet.

However the image is fake. A little Internet sleuthing and a reverse image search soon reveals that the image of the waves (below) were taken from a separate photo credited to a photographer called Ferenc Sohajda and digitally added into a separate photo showing the Jennette Pier.

According to a social media update on the Jennette Pier social media page, there are high winds and waves as a result of Hurricane Jose – however these waves are not 30 feet or crashing over the pier as depicted in the fake photo.

Hurricane Jose — The worst of the storm is brushing past the Outer Banks and we’re experiencing high winds, waves and ocean over wash in several places along N.C. 12 in Nags Head. Ocean waves are not, however, crashing over the end of the pier as portrayed on social media by a local photographer.

As such the image is fake and should not be circulated as genuine.
