Has New York installed GuyFi booths for men?

Rumours that GuyFi booths have been installed in New York for male workers to “relieve themselves” are flying virally across cyberspace.

The rumours claim that the so-called GuyFi booths feature a chair and hi-speed Internet connection and laptop, as well as a curtain for some privacy. Inside the booth men can masturbate before or after they finish work.

However before you express your disgust it should perhaps be noted that none of it is really real. In fact it is a marketing gimmick from a sex company called Hot Octopuss who have already admitted that the booth is just a marketing ploy and they are not actually encouraging people to use it because, after all, that would be very illegal.

Lots of the mainstream media have latched onto the story, claiming or at least insinuating that these GuyFi booths are actually real, and this has led to plenty of people expressing their outrage on social media. But despite the booths actually having been set-up, they are only marketing gimmicks. A spokesperson for the sex company said

We may be insinuating that these booths could be used in whichever way anyone would like to ‘self soothe.. but the brand is not actively encouraging people to masturbate in public as that is an illegal offense

It has proven quite the marketing success, as it has resulted in Hot Octopuss garnering quite a lot of mainstream media attention, and they’re gleefully reposting most of it on their Facebook page. It isn’t clear how long the self-made booths (which are actually disused phone booths) will remain standing for – probably not long. But the claim that they’re being set up for people to use across New York isn’t really accurate – as we stated before, it’s just a marketing gimmick.
