Is SpongeBob SquarePants ending on March 1st 2018? – Fact Check

A rumour is circulating the Internet that claims popular animated show SpongeBob SquarePants is ending on March 2018.

The rumour most popularly comes in the form of a screenshot of a tweet (below) that reads –

Unfortunately, our show will be coming to a final end as of March 1st, 2018. It’s been a long ride, and we are very grateful for all of the fans worldwide that have shown support throughout the years, none of this would have been possible without you.

Fans of the cartoon, however, can relax, because this is nothing more than a hoax. The screenshot of the tweet appears to be fake – a look at the official SpongeBob SquarePants twitter account reveals no such tweet, and none of the social media accounts belonging to either the cartoon or Nickelodeon (who commission the show) have announced that the series will be ending.

In fact, quite the opposite has been reported. Entertainment Weekely have already reported that the series has been renewed for at least another season, will run throughout 2019, essentially blowing this hoax out of the water in which SpongeBob resides.

This isn’t the first time hoaxes like this have circulated. Claims that SpongeBob would soon end spread in both 2014 and 2016. Rumours like this are commonplace since pranksters can use a variety of tools to create fake screenshots of tweets that appear to have come from the official Twitter accounts of their targets.

As we find ourselves repeating more and more often, don’t trust screenshots of tweets! There are so many fakes out there!
