Warning claims mobile games can cause blood veins in eyes to burst – Fact Check

A Facebook post warns that playing mobile games too often can cause the blood vessels in the eyes to burst. The warnings come attached to a graphic photo showing someone with severely bloodshot eyes.

An English version of the warning claims the injury was suffered while playing Mobile Legends. Examples of the warning can be seen below –

Info from RSAL Dr.Mintohardjo Age 15 th his eyes broke, because most of the play HP / tablet. more like playing HP while sleeping. let’s love our eyes …. prevent HP to play for too long. . Do not forget to tag your friends and friends

Victim’s Cell Phone.
The effect of mobile legend playing on phone. Causing strain and too much force. Blood veins in eyes burst! Never push yourself into breaking.

The warning appears to be entirely baseless. The image attached to these warnings has been floating across the Internet for years, and there is no reputable source that the injuries sustained in the photo had anything to do with playing mobile video games.

The injuries in the photo appear to be the result of subconjunctival haemorrhaging. This is where the blood vessels behind the covering of the eye rupture or break, causing blood to leak into the eye. There are many causes, ranging from mild to severe. These can include being choked, head trauma, severe coughing or just rubbing your eyes with too much force. Diseases and infections such as Ebola or Leptospirosis can also cause it.

However, while there are a number of potential health hazards that can stem from playing video games to frequently, merely playing video games is not a cause of a subconjunctival haemorrhage. As such, the warning appears to be entirely baseless and should not be circulated as true.
