Watch out for “order PCR test” scam SMS text messages.

Those with mobile phones should be on the lookout for text SMS scams asking them to order a PCR test.

The latest trick scammers have been using is to send SMS messages claiming the recipient has been in contact with someone with COVID-19, and that the recipient must order a PCR test. The message also provides a link for the recipient to click to order their test.

An example of such a scam text is below.

NHS: You have been in contact with someone who has COVID-19. You must order a PCR Testing Kit here:
Link removed.

However, the link leads to a fake phishing website that demands all sorts of personal data from a visitor. That information is then sent straight to the scammer.

The data requested by the fake websites can include banking information, potentially giving the crooks access to the visitor’s bank accounts.

Alternatively the scammers can request personal data and use it to commit identity fraud, or use it to launch targeted email or phone phishing scams against the victim.

Any official text messages from the government will lead to an official government website. In the UK, that is GOV.UK. If you’re not sure, never enter any information into a website until you have sought confirmation first.
