The best Internet April Fools’ jokes of 2017

The latest annual celebration of fools has just passed, and while many Internet users may not have noticed a difference in the amount of nonsense that circulates cyberspace daily, there were some great pranks pulled over the weekend.

Here are our favourites.

David Attenborough, Life of Grime

This one makes our favourites list simply because “he’s so in right now” Grime artist Stormzy fell for it, hook line and sinker.

The prank? That UK channel BBC Three were broadcasting a new documentary narrated by natural history juggernaut, 90 year old David Attenborough. Check out the tweet below –

It appears Grime (that’s a genre of music, for those not cool or hip enough to know) superstar Stormzy didn’t take the news too well, and DM’d (messaged) something to BBC to make them aware of his displeasure. While the content of that message isn’t known, it was apparently something Stormzy felt warranted a public apology when he discovered he had been pranked.

Hu

Video service Hulu poked fun at our inability to maintain concentration on anything for more than a handful of seconds by promoting its new service Hu, which breaks down your favourite shows into mere 8 second clips. They even have playlists on YouTube!

 

Google Gnome

Google were probably playing is a tad safe this year after a rather controversial prank last year reportedly got people in trouble at work. So for 2017 we had Google Gnome, an outdoor smart assistant that turns your yard into a “smart yard”, so if you ever need to know what direction the wind is blowing, you just need to ask.

Introducing the Google Gnome was a hilarious video that acted more as a comedy sketch than it did an April Fools prank, but it was no less as entertaining. Of course Google – the most prolific of online pranksters – had a few other tricks up their sleeve including turning Google Maps into Ms. Pacman, but the Google Gnome was definitely our favourite. Amazon Petlexa

Sticking to the smart assistant theme, Amazon Echo also got in on the act, with Petlexa. Another prank-that’s-essentially-a-comedy-sketch sees the Amazon Echo get a software upgrade, allowing the device to understand your pets in a sketch that is reminiscent of an older Google prank called Google Translate for Animals.

Toothpaste that tastes like a Burger King Whopper burger? Well, that pretty much sums Burger King’s entry to the mix.

An amusing tweet from The Guardian reported that ex-chancellor from the UK George Osbourne is to get a new clothing line…
