The aim with many of these fake events is to both attract as many attendees as possible (similar to like-farming scams that aim to attract followers to a page) as well as to lure many attendees as possible to third party websites that request their personal information. This information is then given to marketing companies which will then target them with spam.

As usual, we recommend our readers avoid Facebook events that offer ambiguous details about events that mention no details or contact information about the organisers. If you search for the name of the event without the city name you will notice multiple events appear, and this is a red flag that you may be looking at a spammy fake Facebook event.

We discuss this type of spam in more detail in our article here.
