Did IKEA billboard really poke fun out of Clive Palmer? Fact Check

A billboard from IKEA appears to poke fun of Australian businessman Clive Palmer, whose political party failed to win a single seat in a recent Australian election despite a reported $60 million AUD advertising spend.

The billboard says –

Geez Clive…
$60 million and not a single seat?
Should’ve come to Ikea.

The billboard then goes on to advertise a $27.99 swivel chair.

Clive Palmer’s political party, the United Australia Party, did not win a single seat in the 2019 Australian federal election, despite reports that Palmer committed many millions of dollars in advertising.

The billboard itself does not exist, and has nothing to do with IKEA. The Swedish furniture chain only uses its name in all-capital letters on its advertising material, which this billboard does not.

In reality it was created by designer Adrian Elton who posted it on his Twitter feed on 20th May.

Of course it is a spoof billboard, but some social media users did not realise that the term “spoof” in this sense means that the billboard has been digitally altered.
