No, Durex are NOT releasing an eggplant flavoured condom

Social media has been alight this week with the apparent announcement by condom manufacturer Durex that they will be releasing a new flavour to their existing range, eggplant.

For us Brits, that’s an aubergine.

The rumours started when the Durex Global account released a tweet announcing the new flavour along with an image of the packaging, below.

The Durex brand quickly began trending on Twitter, and needless to say, the announcement was met with a mixture of both disgust and mockery, often to do with the fact that the eggplant is a key ingredient in India’s signature dish baingan ka bharta.

However it’s a hoax. Yes Durex did tweet the announcement, but in reality it is part of a campaign stunt by Durex to introduce a condom emoji on social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp and on smartphones, to help younger people discuss safe sex.

How are safe sex and eggplants connected? Apparently the eggplant is used to denote a male’s private parts. Of course.

Durex revealed the hoax to The Mirror, saying –

“Durex knows there is no place for an aubergine when it comes to safe sex. It’s just as questionable, in fact, as a decision not to introduce a Safe Sex Emoji to empower young people to talk about sex, safely, in a language they are comfortable with.

So it turns out that eggplant flavoured condoms actually won’t be coming to a pharmacy near you.
