Facebook launch new “security basics” guide
Keeping your social media accounts hacker-free has become increasingly important, and Facebook are keen to help their users in terms of account security with the launch of their new “Security Basics” guide.
Keeping intruders out of your Facebook account for most people is vital. Your account is more than likely a treasure trove of personal information about you and your friends, and it is all gold dust for an identity thief.
It was only recently that Facebook launched the “Privacy Basics” section, an easy way to communicate the very complex world that revolves around how Facebook treat your personal information.
And now comes the “How to keep your account secure” guide that provides a simple overview of the most popular threats on social media, including phishing scams and spam. It also provides tips on securing your accounts (read our [more in-depth] section on securing your account here) as well as information on active sessions and how Facebook handles government requests for your information.

However these articles provide only a very broad and brief overview of some of the threats facing Facebook users, and is by no means a comprehensive or detailed account of what to expect when using Facebook from a security perspective. For example there is very little information on like-farming Facebook pages or share-to-watch video spam links, which perhaps represent the most commonly encountered types of spam you see on the world’s largest social networking site.
So whilst it’s a good, simple overview, your security precautions shouldn’t stop there. Remember to educate yourself on the threats facing social media users in as much detail as you can. You can do that by subscribing to sites like ours for current news, useful how-to guides and opinion pieces.
