The Internet is full of websites claiming you can make money from home simply by posting links on the Internet. As your go-to hoax debunkers, it’s about time we took a closer look…

The work-from-home industry is a popular topic online, and there’s no shortage of opportunities claiming to help you get rich. The problem is, opportunities that claim you can make lots of money just by posting links online are misleading you. You see, it isn’t that simple.
So can I make money by posting links online? Well, yes and no. If you’re imagining yourself just effortlessly copying and pasting links all over the place and cashing those cheques every week, then you’re going to be disappointed.
Sites that sort of imply these things are impossible (but never really let you know what you’re actually going to be doing) are probably selling one of these things –
1. They’re websites wanting you to spam websites with links to their website. Google used to love websites with lots of backlinks and would rank them highly. But people tried to “game the system” by spamming links everywhere, so Google changed. Now posting links everywhere will result in a site being penalised. So these opportunities barely exist now and if you do find one you’ll make more money wandering around a city centre picking pennies from the floor.
2. Get-Rich-Quick scams. These are the sites that promise a “system” that will make you easy, quick money. Providing you pay for the secrets, of course. They usually sell garbage marketing information, usually about affiliate marketing, of which “posting links” is just one small facet of a very large industry. So basically they’re misleading you by claiming you can make money by posting links, which is kind of like saying you can get rich on the stock market by selling stuff. There’s a lot more to it than that.
Whatever opportunity you stumble across, the takeaway here is that there is no realistic way of making lots of money online just by posting links on the Internet. Sorry.
Okay… so you’re saying I can’t make money online?
Not at all. We’re saying it’s not as simple as just posting links. There is good news here, and that is making money online is absolutely possible. You don’t even need your own product to sell. Yes it requires a good work ethic, the willingness to learn new (and exciting) things and – most importantly – determination (the ‘posting links on the Internet’ opportunities fail to mention that, funnily enough.)
If you can imagine yourself capable of working from home, but working hard and tackling the challenges that await you head on, then there is no reason why you can’t be the next work-from-home Internet success.
Lots of Internet successes work with affiliate marketing. That means selling products belonging to others (like products you find on Amazon) and getting a commission for every sale. The good thing about that is there is genuinely no cap on how much you can earn, and the most successful can make hundreds of thousands each year (though most don’t quite make that much!)
Take for example, Darren Rowse who owns a very successful affiliate website centered around digital photography. Or sites like shutupandtakemymoney.com that is focused on all kinds of cool gadgets. Both sites make their creators an awful lot of money. But remember, they spend an awful lot of time working on them too.
If this interests you, you need to take those initial steps to get yourself started.
There is a TON of good information on the Internet in various places if you’re a dab hand with a search engine. However if you’re looking for a good starting point, we can’t recommend the ChrisFarrellMembership highly enough. It’s a multiple award winning course on online marketing (including affiliate marketing) that teaches you all those important steps to getting your online adventure started, and has started many a career online.
There’s a monthly subscription cost (around $37 a month last time we checked) and that can be cancelled at any time. For that you get affiliate marketing basics, blogging basics, information on websites, how to make sales (and money) as well as an endless amount of tutorials and guides.
If that doesn’t suit, there are also a number of great books available, like this book by Darren Rowse (who we mentioned above) called Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six Figure Income where he outlines loads of great information on how to make money blogging. (UK readers click here.)
Ultimately it is important to remember that there are no shortcuts to being successful online. Don’t sign up for courses that promise riches just by posting links on the Internet. No such systems exist. Watch out for hype, unrealistic claims and ambiguousness. These are all red flags to get-rich-quick scams. If you do sign up for our recommendations above, we wish you the best of luck and let us know how you get on. Good luck, and here’s to your online success!
